Recording sixteen hours a day

I am working shifts as miner in China, haha.

Today is the first day without holding a cam, since who knows when. We have been doing various stuff for Untouched (check the blog on our webpage) and shooting rails with Jibrothers and Vogel locals. George found a Mecca for street rails somewhere in Austria and we have been going back for three days. Night shoots, day shoots, exercising German… it is all part of the process. One thing we realized is that Austria is so far ahead from our post transition state, just because of their positive attitude towards things and a will to communicate and make compromises. No unnecessary yelling and threatening, just clear common sense and some effort on your side and you can ride a spot for days. Loving it!

Every snowflake counts

Every year we get some days, when snow embraces the cities. Since we were kids we always went jibbing some skaterail, but nowadays we use this days (or mostly nights) for filming real spots.

Jibrothers are on a mission all day, every day, so I got a message that we should go filming today, before I took a look through the window and noticed we got 10cm of white outside.

We gathered lights and shovels that have been waiting too long and hit the streets. Šparovc got two tricks in the bag in front of the mandatory crowd and the celebratory 2AM beer was well deserved. More to come in next days…

Planneralm sessions

The shooting with Jibrothers for Qparks on Planneralm was one of the best, period.

We drove into a foggy resort, filled with fresh snow. Did some lines, knee deep pow, certainly best breakfast a guy can have anytime in winter.

Later the skies cleared out, sun and bluebird for the rest of the day. Filmed a mellow session with skiers Andraž Šparovec and Uroš Podbevšek and another one with snowboarders Matthias Gober, Flo Galler and Dominick Weghaupt and still had time for another quick powder run before the sunset. Baus day, haha.

Check the session clips below…

Vogel park opening

Mt. Vogel is our home resort and I have been waiting to go up there since I came from Portugal. It is a place where you are surrounded by your friends and proper mountains and thats all I ask for the winter.

On Friday they opened the snowpark, the sun was up and everybody was there. We hit the kicker, filmed a little and just hanged out together. Bangin’ first day!

Enjoy the clip and merry Christmas to all!

Last surf session before the winter

It is finally getting colder and it even started to snow in the higher mountains of the Julian Alps.

Cyclones that bring the most snow to Slovenia, arrive over France, continue their way below the Alps in Italy and bring southern winds over Adriatic Sea. Which in short means waves. Once or twice per year we get lucky and the front makes a sharp turn and the winds turn southwest. Then it is time to check Barbariga.

The forecast was looking really nice and we were hoping to ride some sizable lefts, yet the weather had its own plan, I guess. We got a waist high chop, but it was fun anyway. I also did some filming for my “no deadline” Slovenian surf documentary, because like I said, it is rare to get a chance to surf Barbariga and this is also a (big) part of what surfing on “home turf” means for Slovenian soul surfers…

Concrete waves of Spain (last part): Algorta heaven

My explorations of the surf route from France to Portugal had come to an end last week.

Katja and me made 11000+ km, seen, surfed, skated and experienced so many things I could write a book. It truly was the trip of my life, with ups and downs and everything in between. It is good to go abroad for such a long time, so you re-learn where your real home is and who your true friends are.

On the way back we just had to do another stop: Algorta, Cantabria.

Every transition lover and true skater has seen this wonder of a skatepark in skate movies, so we could not just drive by not to get a little feel of it. The park is super good for surf style shredding, but I mainly wanted to ride the blue pool (now its actually black).

It looked kind of abandoned, full of trash and the locals riding everything else but this… and you learn quickly why. I can say without any shame I was scared after a long time, while it is so steep you think you are free falling into a pit of doom! Nonetheless I think my friends Uroš and Šmid would love it, but you really have to give a pile of respect to all the pros who ride it properly!

Down to Portugal

We have spent a portion of our vacation in France first, next in Basque and then moved to Cantabria in Spain. We did some exploring on the coast, skateboarding, surfing, sightseeing, went to Picos de Europa and just filmed when felt necessary. Allthough you are on well deserved time off, one can not resist taking a camera out wherever he is, especially if it is all new and fresh.

Few days ago we joined our friends on the Ujusansa Surfari Portugal to Peniche. We are staying in a really nice house in Baleal with a wiev directly to the Lagide reef. It just does not get better than this for the last part of the holidays and you really get creative again, while it is picturesque, warm and the waves pumping!

Concrete waves of Cantabria (part 12): Somo

The waves took a little time off in Cantabria, Spain, so the best way to get some surf like riding was to go check the Somo skatepark.

The park is brand new, has a sick bowl with an extension, a oververted wave wall and few smaller trannies. I had a mellow session with the guys from Zaragoza, who also gave me good advice where to go in our next stop in Portugal…

Concrete waves of Cantabria (part 11): Noja

I always check for good skateparks around where we travel and this one in Noja, Cantabria, looked really worth checking out.

It is a combination of a snake run, miniramp and a pool end, all in one bowl! Sadly it is not well maintained. You can just ride the ramp part or pump around, which is not how you would go at it, if the top layer would not be in such bad shape. I was really bummed, but the crazy graffiti were something cool to see…

Concrete waves of Asturias (part 10): Streets of Aviles

Our german friends wanted to do a little surf tripping as the swell forecast was kind of huge. They went further west, to Asturias, where they had some good reef spots in mind, and Katja and I were happy to join.

On the second day of our travels we passed by this cool looking street spot in the town of Aviles, Asturias. Despite the rough grounds, it was pretty sick just pumping down the streets and doing little carves as it felt like surfing the concrete…
